Bayern-beat-Schalke to cut Dortmund lead

Bayern beat Schalke to cut Dortmund lead

Champions Bayern Munich beat Schalke 04 3-1 yesterday to climb back into second place and cut the gap on Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund to five points. Goals from Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry after a Schalke own goal lifted the Bavarians, who bounced back from last week’s loss to Bayer Leverkusen and face Liverpool in the Champions League round of 16 later this month, to 45.
Dortmund are on 50 points after wasting a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 with Hoffenheim earlier yesterday. Borussia Moenchengladbach dropped to third on 42 after losing 3-0 to visiting Hertha Berlin.
Jeffrey Bruma’s own goal on his Schalke debut put the hosts ahead before Ahmed Kutucu, making his first Bundesliga start for Schalke after scoring in the German Cup in midweek, levelled in the 25th.
But the 18-year-old’s joy was cut short when forward Lewandowski struck two minutes later to Bayern ahead once more. Schalke, last season’s runners-up, came close to another equaliser early in the second half but Serge Gnabry killed off their hopes when he wrong-footed keeper Ralf Faehrmann with a clever header from a Lewandowski bicycle kick. Schalke dropped to 13th on 22 points, seven above the relegation zone.
Earlier, Dortmund inexplicably surrendered a three-goal lead in the second half to draw 3-3 against Hoffenheim after completely dominating for more than an hour. The league leaders have only themselves to blame for the draw that comes just days before Wednesday’s Champions League last-16, first leg against Tottenham Hotspur in London.
Jadon Sancho, in the absence of Dortmund captain Marco Reus, took control for the hosts in the first half, firing in to give them the lead and slicing through the hapless Hoffenheim defence at will. The England international then set up Mario Goetze for Dortmund’s second goal before combining with Goetze to set up Raphael Guerreiro for an easy tap-in in the 66th.
Sancho almost got a second goal in the 75th but his low shot hit the post and bounced clear before the hosts stepped off the gas, allowing Ishak Belfodil to cut the deficit in the 75th. Pavel Kaderabek then rose above his marker to head in with seven minutes left and set up a nervous finale.
The visitors’ memorable comeback was completed when Belfodil headed in a free kick in the 87th. “It was very bitter after a very good first half with Sancho playing an outstanding game,” said Dortmund assistant Edin Terzic, standing in for head coach Lucien Favre at the news conference after the Swiss missed the game with the flu. “We lost possession far too often in the second half.”
Dortmund scorer Goetze said they made far too many mistakes, especially after such a dominant first hour. “When you lead 3-0 at home and then you play a 3-3 then it obviously is extremely bitter,” Goetze told reporters. “That should never have happened. Especially after such a performance for large parts of the game and after a strong first half.”

Bundesliga results
Borussia Dortmund 3 (Sancho 32, Goetze 43, Guerreiro 66) Hoffenheim 3 (Belfodil 75, 87, Kaderabek 83); RB Leipzig 0 Eintracht Frankfurt 0; Borussia Moenchengladbach 0 Hertha Berlin 3 (Kalou 30, Duda 56, Selke 76); Hanover 2 (N. Mueller 45+5, 77) Nuremberg 0; Freiburg 3 (Grifo 37, Petersen 70, Waldschmidt 88) Wolfsburg 3 (Roussillon 11, Weghorst 63, Steffen 75); Bayern Munich 3 (Bruma 12-og, Lewandowski 27, Gnabry 57) Schalke 1 (Kutucu 25)

Bayern-stumble-out after-draw with Altinordu

Bayern stumble out after draw with Altinordu

Bayern Munich crashed out of Al Kass 2019 after drawing 1-1 with surprise package Altinordu in a dramatic finale to Group C.
Bayern came into the game knowing that only a win would ensure progress to the knockout stage, having lost their opening game 2-3 to ESS.
Munich had made five changes this time round, including Nemanja Motika, who was elevated to the starting 11 after coming off the bench to score last time out.
Bayern went close early on when Thorben Rhein swung a corner in from the left that Gabriel Marusic rose highest to meet, but his header went wide when he may have expected to hit the target.
The Germans took the lead, with VAR playing a decisive role as referee Kulcsar reviewed the tape and adjudged that an arm had been used to block a goal-bound shot. Moritz Mosandl made no mistake from the spot – his second penalty conversion in as many games.
The goal appeared to wake the Turks up. Salih Kavrazli took a ball on the left wing, and powered all the way to the byline before cutting back to Enis Destan, who made no mistake from 10 yards.
Soon after the restart, Kavrazli should have given his side the lead, when he was first onto a low ball from the left, but he miskicked from six yards out.
Bayern went straight down the other end and also went close, with Yusuf Kabadayi dragging his shot just wide of the far post.
With time running out and tension rising, Bayern desperately needed a goal. They went close when a goalmouth scramble followed a lofted free kick, but Altinordu keeper Emirhan Emir eventually managed to pluck the ball out of the air. Despite the pressure, the Izmir youngsters looked well in control.
Aspire Academy will provide the opposition for the Turks in the second of today’s quarter-finals. With both sides in fine form, a winner is difficult to predict.

SPARTAK REACH QUARTERS
Spartak Moscow were impressive all-round to see off Suwon Samsung 3-1 and qualify for the quarter-finals.
Spartak knew that anything other than a victory would see them go out; so they went at the Koreans from the start and they were ahead after just four minutes.
Sviatoslav Kozhedub had already gone close by the time Daniil Grigorev found Aslan Mutaliev and he cut inside before sending in a superb shot that gave the keeper no chance.
Skipper Ilya Golyatov, who scored twice in a narrow defeat by Real Madrid in their opener, went close midway through the first half but he couldn’t keep his shot down.
Spartak doubled their lead two minutes before the break when Kozhedub sent over an inviting right-wing cross for Golyatov who headed his third goal of the competition so far. The goal makes Golyatov the leading scorer during the group stages.
The second half saw Spartak continue to impress and the influential Kozhedub went close with a superb left-foot free-kick from outside the penalty area but the keeper tipped it onto the woodwork.
Just before the hour-mark Spartak grabbed a third and it was another excellent finish. Magomedemin Rabadanov’s free-kick was blocked but it fell nicely for Grigorev, who cut onto his left foot and fired past the goalkeeper.
Suwon had hardly been in the match but they were gifted a goal on 67 minutes when Seungwan Ryu’s shot found its way into the net following a mistake by the keeper. Ryu’s effort went straight through keeper Pavel Boriskin’s legs and despite his efforts to chase  the ball, it  trickled over the line.
Despite pulling one back, Suwon struggled to contain the Russians and the impressive Kozhedub shot into the side netting before Nikolay Genchi sent a curling effort narrowly wide.
Hojun Son did have a decent effort for Suwon with 10 minutes to go but Spartak substitute Yadim Zhikhartsev also had two opportunities to score in the closing stages.
Spartak will now come up against impressive Italian outfit Roma in the quarter-finals.

Stockdale-inspires-Irish-to end Scots Six Nations home run

Jacob Stockdale created one and scored a try of his own to inspire Six Nations champions Ireland to a 22-13 victory over Scotland at Murrayfield yesterday to bounce back from an opening loss to England.
The Irish ran in three tries through Conor Murray, Stockdale – the prolific winger’s 13th try in 16 Tests – and Keith Earls.
Their joy at the win may be tempered by how serious an injury world player of the year Johnny Sexton suffered in the first-half. In ending a run of seven Scotland home wins in the Six Nations, Joe Schmidt’s side became the first visiting side to record a championship victory since England in 2016.
Ireland next play Italy in Rome in a fortnight while the Scots – who lost key player Stuart Hogg to injury also in the first-half – are away in Paris against France.
Murray and Stockdale struck in the opening 16 minutes of a breathless first-half in which both teams lost their star men to injury, Hogg departing after 16 minutes and a battered Sexton with an accumulation of wounds seven minutes later.
A 28th minute try by Australian-born centre Sam Johnson helped Scotland narrow the gap to 12-10 by half-time – only for Earls’ 55th minute score to nudge Ireland towards a victory that will lift their morale following their 32-20 loss to England in Dublin.
Ireland also gained a psychological boost ahead of their opening World Cup pool match against the Scots in Yokohama in September.
Scotland were on the front foot from the off and after six minutes Greig Laidlaw kicked them in front with a penalty from in front of the posts.
The lead lasted just four minutes. Ireland’s captain Rory Best hailed a strong performance from Sexton’s replacement Carbery, who recovered from throwing an intercepted pass for the only Scottish try to enjoy an influential second half.
“Joey is a quality player, you don’t want to see anyone go off injured, but it’s great to see everyone coming off the bench and stepping up,” he said.
Stockdale chipped the ball up the left wing and Tommy Seymour’s sloppy pass to Sean Maitland hit the deck, allowing Murray to collect the loose ball and bag the opening try after ten minutes.
Sexton was injured in the move and, after receiving treatment, the Leinster fly-half pushed his conversion attempt wide of the posts, leaving Ireland in front 5-3.
Prior to that counter attack, Hogg had damaged his shoulder and when the Scotland full-back made way for Blair Kinghorn Ireland struck again.
Stockdale took a feed from Sexton just inside the Scotland half and the 22-year-old Ulster flyer motored 50m to the line.
Murray assumed kicking duties from Sexton and made no mistake with the conversion, stretching Ireland’s lead to 12-3.
Sexton left the field with a head injury after 23 minutes and five minutes later his replacement, Joey Carbery, threw Scotland a chance to let Scotland back into contention.
In attempting to find centre Bundee Aki, the Munster fly-half only succeeded in feeding Finn Russell. The charging Scotland outside-half was stopped shy of the line by Earls but popped up a pass for Johnson to score his first international try. Laidlaw’s conversion narrowed the gap to 12-10 and Scotland might have gone into the half-time break with a lead had Ireland not absorbed 25 phases of pressure with a resolute green wall of defence just before the interval.
The Scottish defence produced something similar to repel Ireland early in the second half, a prolonged multi-phase attack coming to an end with a thumping tackle on Earls by hooker Stuart McInally.
Ironically, it was some slack Scottish defending that allowed Carbery to burst over the halfway line before shipping out a long, looping pass for Earls to score Ireland’s third try after 55 minutes.
Carbery nailed the conversion to stretch the lead to nine points.
Laidlaw narrowed the advantage to 19-13 with a second penalty success but Carbery made it 22-13 with a 68th minute penalty with what proved to be the final scoring action of the match.

Qatar wins 2019 AFC Asian cup semi final against UAE; ready to face finals

Qatar did it! Congratulations to the whole of Qatar on this historic win.
Qatar has won the semi finals in one of the most exciting and nail - biting matches of the
entire 2019 AFC Asian Cup in the UAE against the home team at Abu Dhabi’s
Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium despite a hostile environment inside the stadium
because of UAE supporters! In fact, UAE supporters even threw shoes, bottles and other items
at the Qatari team after they scored the second goal but this did not deter the Qatar team
who continued to play their best.
What an achievement!
This is the very first time that Qatar has beaten the UAE in an AFC Asian Cup
Tournament, and the very first time that Qatar is in the tournament’s semi finals.
The first goal was scored by Qatar’s Boualem Khoukhi in the 22nd minute of the first half.
Almoez Ali scored the second goal in the 37thminute of the first half of the match bringing his score
total to eight in this tournament and has now equalled Iran player Ali Daei's record for most goals in
a single tournament. The score at the end of the first half
stood at 2 – 0 in favour of Qatar.
In the second half of this semi finals match that has both the Qatari and UAE sides sitting at the
edge of their seats, Qatar continued its winning streak with Hasan Al Haydos scoring the third
goal for Qatar in the 80th minute, and though UAE did have some chances to score, it was unable to.
In the final minutes of the match, UAE’s Ismail Ahmed was sent off the pitch for elbowing
Qatar’s Salem Al Hajri off the ball.
In the extra time of the match (90+3 minutes, Qatar’s Hamid Ismail scored the fourth and final
score of this semi finals leaving the total score at the end of the match at 4 – 0 with Qatar
now in the finals with Japan on 1 February.
Despite the fact that people from Qatar were not there to support its team, support poured
in from Omanis, Qataris and other expat communities who cheered Qatar on to win the
semi finals. Amongst those that were rooting for Qatar is a Korean lady who has been
supporting Qatar throughout the 2019 AFC Asian Cups and even those held before.

India's SBI- set to own 15% of- Jet Airways -Etihad 40%: reports

Jet Airways creditor State Bank of India is likely to own 15 percent of the airline if the cash-strapped carrier's plan for a debt-for-equity swap is approved, Indian TV channels reported on Tuesday.
With debts of about $1.14 billion, Jet has been hit by fierce competition from other low-cost carriers, a rupee depreciation and high oil prices. It owes money to banks, pilots, vendors and lessors, some of whom are considering taking back aircraft, sources have told Reuters.
Jet said on Monday it would seek shareholder approval next month to convert debt into equity, increase its share capital and allow lenders to nominate a director on its board to help resolve its financial problems.
Its lenders, including SBI, could end up owning as much as 30 percent while shareholder Etihad Airways could see its stake rise to more than 40 percent from 24 percent if it injects more equity in the Indian carrier, TV channels reported.
The airline's founder and chairman Naresh Goyal is likely to see his stake cut to below 20 percent from 51 percent.
Jet, which controls a sixth of India's booming aviation market, did not respond to a request comment, while SBI and Etihad also did not reply to emails seeking a response.
Indian banks in 2010 undertook a similar debt for equity swap to try and save Kingfisher Airlines, founded by liquor baron Vijay Mallya, and ended up owning nearly a quarter of the airline, before losing out when it was eventually grounded.
Jet defaulted on a debt payment to a consortium of Indian banks, lead by SBI, this month, prompting a downgrade by ratings agency ICRA. The airline has to make large debt repayments over the next few years, starting with about 17 billion rupees ($242 million) by the end of March, ICRA said on Jan. 2.
The Economic Times reported on Tuesday that Jet's lenders want to repossess some planes and have forced the airline to ground five aircraft, including its new fuel-efficient Boeing 737 MAX planes, leading to flight cancellations.
Jet was scheduled to add 11 737 MAX planes to its fleet by March 31, but has taken delivery of only five and will not add more until a resolution plan is agreed, Reuters has reported.
